Read More About

From the earliest moments I can remember, it was my mother’s love of beauty that inspired me—nurturing my own affection for ballet, art, design, flowers, and scent. Every week, as a young girl, I would accompany her to the beauty counters of Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, and Helena Rubinstein. There, surrounded by luminous bottles and elegant rituals, I inhaled her aura—sophisticated, serene, unforgettable. It was in those gilded halls of fragrance and powder that my lifelong love affair with beauty and scent began. And it is where I learnt that the art of scent is a ritual of elegance.

Years later, one of my first beauty roles was as a Product Manager for Christian Dior—a position that deepened my passion and marked the true beginning of my love story with perfume. To work behind the scenes of such an iconic house was to witness fragrance as art, emotion, and legacy all at once. It was there that I learned the true meaning of wearing perfume beautifully.

To wear fragrance well is to perform a quiet ritual—one of elegance and restraint. In perfumery, the art lies not only in the alchemy of notes, but in the delicate dance of application. A scent, like a whispered secret, reveals its beauty most when worn with grace.

Coco Chanel once said, “Perfume heralds a woman’s arrival and prolongs her departure.” What does your arrival say about your scent signature as you enter a room?

THE SENSES OF BEAUTY

I often speak of the five senses of beauty, and when it comes to fragrance, scent reigns supreme. Perfume is crafted within distinct fragrance families—floral, citrus, oriental, woody—and many compositions blend elements from more than one. When you first experience a scent, notice what immediately draws you in. That first impression can be telling, but it’s only the beginning.

Never rush the decision. Allow the perfume to settle and develop on your skin for at least 30 minutes—this is when its true character is revealed through the dry down.

And while fragrance blotters are helpful, they’re no substitute for the chemistry between scent and skin. (Though they do make lovely bookmarks.)

Avoid testing too many perfumes at once—your sense of smell can quickly become overwhelmed. To reset your nose, try sniffing the crook of your elbow, or step outside for a breath of fresh air. The key is to take your time; choosing a fragrance is a sensory journey, not a race.

YOUR SKIN TELLS A STORY

Apply scent with intention. Focus on the pulse points—those delicate areas where blood flows closest to the surface, such as the wrists, neck, and décolletage. These naturally warm spots help the fragrance evolve more beautifully and diffuse throughout the day. Just two or three spritzes are all you need for a lasting impression.

Avoid spraying directly onto clothing; while tempting, fragrance is best worn on skin, where it can truly interact with your body’s chemistry. Spraying fabric may not only dull the scent’s complexity, but could also damage delicate textiles.

A LAYERING BOUQUET

Layering fragrance is a subtle art—one that allows you to create a scent signature that is entirely your own. By combining contrasting notes—think fresh with spicy, or woody with floral—you can tailor your perfume to suit the season, your mood, or even a moment in time. This technique transforms fragrance into something deeply personal and ever-evolving. Craft a scent that is uniquely yours.

Aerin Lauder perfectly captures the spirit of scent layering. Try blending her signature Mediterranean Honeysuckle with the radiant Mediterranean Honeysuckle Tiaré. This luminous pairing of fresh florals and sparkling citrus evokes the sun-drenched breeze of a tropical escape—effortlessly bright, vibrant, and endlessly wearable. PRESERVE THE ESSENCE

Perfume, much like a living creation, is exquisitely sensitive to its surroundings. Sudden shifts in temperature—from warmth to cold—can disrupt its delicate balance, causing the natural ingredients to age prematurely or shift in character. Even light, especially ultraviolet rays, can compromise the fragrance, altering its colour and diminishing its beauty—rich amber hues may turn unexpectedly green.

As precious as perfume is, it’s meant to be enjoyed—not left languishing on a shelf. Once a bottle is opened, exposure to oxygen—the silent enemy of fragrance—begins to subtly alter its molecular structure, changing the very essence of the scent.

Use It—Don’t Lose It: Why Smaller Bottles Preserve the Magic: According to renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, daily wearers of a signature scent can comfortably commit to larger bottles, such as a 6.8 mL size. But in most cases, he advises choosing smaller formats—ideally between 1.2 and 2.4 milliliters—which preserve the fragrance’s freshness for up to three months.

If a generous full-size bottle is your only option, all is not lost. Choose one with a screw cap or stopper and consider decanting it into smaller glass vials for daily use. For extra preservation, lightly used bottles can even be stored in the fridge—helping to maintain their delicate bloom for longer.

UDERSTANDING SYNTHETIC SCIENCE

The science behind modern perfumery needs to be understood. While the allure of ‘all-natural’ perfumes is undeniably romantic, the truth is more complex—and more fascinating. “People love the idea of natural fragrances,” says master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, “but they don’t always exist.” Take musk, for instance: once derived from animals, it’s now ethically and sustainably recreated through synthetic means, bringing warmth and depth to modern scents.

Some beloved florals—like peony, freesia, and lily of the valley—can’t be naturally extracted at all. These flowers, while fragrant in nature, release no scent molecules that can be captured through traditional methods. Their aromas are instead artfully reconstructed using carefully blended synthetic compounds.

Far from being inferior, these lab-created elements have been integral to fine perfumery since the late 19th century. Today, they are rigorously tested and regulated by organisations such as the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) to ensure safety and quality. According to Kurkdjian, it’s the sophisticated balance of essential oils, natural absolutes, and refined synthetics that gives a fragrance its complexity, longevity, and signature trail.

A SEASONAL SIGNATURE

Selecting the perfect fragrance for each season is about more than just the notes—it’s about capturing the mood, atmosphere, and activities that define the time of year.

In the warmer months, summer calls for fresh, light perfumes with high sillage—fragrances that project effortlessly without overwhelming in the heat. Lighter concentrations, such as Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne, Eau Fraiche, or Splash Cologne, are ideal choices. These formulations are delicate enough to complement the warmth and humidity of summer, and their crisp, breathable nature pairs perfectly with the light fabrics that define the season.

As the weather turns cooler, fragrances should evolve to match the depth and richness of autumn and winter. These seasons call for scents with a stronger base, and a more concentrated formula—Eau de Parfum, Parfum, Extrait, or Absolut—is the perfect choice. The higher concentration not only enhances the fragrance’s presence amid heavier clothing layers but also ensures that the scent remains vibrant and comforting, even as the dry air and cooler temperatures challenge its longevity.

To wear fragrance with elegance and grace is to embrace its subtle power, letting it enhance your presence without overwhelming it. A truly stylish scent lingers in the air, leaving a delicate impression that speaks to your personality and refinement. It’s not about overpowering others with intensity, but about crafting an invisible signature that complements your every movement.

Like a perfectly tailored outfit, the right fragrance should feel effortless, timeless, and deeply personal. By choosing a scent that resonates with your essence, you elevate not just your appearance but the way you engage with the world—gracefully, confidently, and with undeniable style. The art of scent lies in wearing it with grace and intention. It is a ritual of elegance.
