A Marimekko Moment

Boldness In Colour
A Finnish icon in the art of textiles is Marimekko. Founded in 1951 by Armi Ratia, Marimekko has had a lifelong mission of bringing joy and colour to homes. She designed the house’s first knitwear collection, Tasaraida, which became a symbol of equality. The unmistakable Marimekko prints have been worn as bold badges of creativity, positivity and personal empowerment for over 70 years.
Design In Photography
In 1964 Life Magazine sent photographer Tony Vaccaro to capture the design work of Marimekko. Their intuitive style had become internationally iconic. The imagery created played on the eccentricity of the brand and the location of the Finnish countryside. These designs are still relevant today to the brand’s essence and design principles as they were in 1964.

The Art Of Textiles
Marimekko has brought renewed inspiration to the brand through a collective of artists from the world’s most inspirational designers, together with new emerging creative talent.

Their distinctive striped, checked, and floral prints in bold colours make up a rich artistic legacy. Each season new designs are created and reimaged from the archives. Marimekko prints come to life in the printing factory in Helsinki, which is the heart and soul of the brand.

A Design Legacy
In the 1960’s Annika Rimala drew inspiration from the youth culture of the time, and this latest collection reflects that ethos of the rhythmic iconic patterns she designed in those years. It is a collection of fashion textiles that inspires a positivity with the boldness of maxi dresses and touches of pink.
The season pays homage to the world of architecture, where form follows function. It is a collection of bold textile prints and shapes that meet with softer elements. It is organic and vibrant exhibiting a structure that does not inhibit the form of a piece.

The Antti Kekki Prints
A new generation of design has emerged with something that is fresh and bold. Antti Kekki is a Helenski-based illustrator. His work relies on a simple collage technique in which different forms are cut from paper and carefully arranged in playful ensembles. Antti has been collaborating with Marimekko since 2019. And this latest series celebrates his unique work and the notable fabrics of the brand.

THE DESIGN OF ARCHETYPES
Marimekko builds its design philosophy that consists of pieces from their many different collections – past and present.
The three archetypes of A-Line, straight, and Fit & Flare creates a unique sense of timeless design.
