TRAVEL NOTEBOOK – MILAN

For almost 30 years, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Milan twice a year for the international shoe fair. My family often jokes that I know the streets of Milan better than those of Melbourne. Each time I step off the plane, it feels like returning to a familiar place that I love. Milan’s blend of fashion, food, and culture never ceases to inspire me. Here are some of my personal favourites when it comes to staying, eating, and shopping in this timeless city.
WHERE TO STAY
UNAHOTELS Cusani Milano: This hotel is perfectly situated between the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco, making it an ideal location for those wanting to explore Milan’s historic centre and indulge in some serious shopping. Modern yet elegant, Cusani Milano offers refined comfort wrapped in Italian luxury. It’s my go-to for a polished, worry-free stay.
Hotel Manzoni: Located in Milan’s Fashion Quarter on the quiet street of Santo Spirito, this charming four-star hotel has been a staple since 1951. With wooden floors and classic furnishings, Hotel Manzoni welcomes guests with warm hospitality that makes you feel right at home. If you’re planning a shopping spree, this is the perfect place to rest your feet.
Living Like a Local – Airbnb: For those who prefer a more local experience, renting an apartment through Airbnb is a great option. I love staying near the Duomo or in the Brera district. Having an apartment allows me to wind down in a relaxed space after a busy day of meetings and events. Plus, I get to enjoy local Pasticceria’s, and delis, and indulge in fresh Italian delicacies whenever I want. There’s nothing quite like exploring the Milanese delicatessens!
WHERE TO EAT

A Santa Lucia: Located just steps from the Duomo, this classic trattoria is the perfect spot to take a break for lunch or enjoy a cosy dinner. The walls are adorned with photographs, and the atmosphere is both charming and inviting. The menu is filled with Italian favourites, making it a must-visit.
Calaluna Osteria : This is my absolute favourite place in Milan. Tucked away from the typical tourist spots, this Sardinian gem is known for its exceptional fish dishes. From fish tartare to a unique seafood pasta bake encased in pizza dough, it’s a hidden treasure that I never miss out on during my visits.
Trattoria Torre di Pisa: In the heart of Brera, this quaint spot offers home-style Tuscan dishes, featuring hearty steaks and delicious pasta. The laid-back, earthy atmosphere makes it a comfortable place to settle in for a long, satisfying meal.
Bacaro: For a more intimate dining experience, Bacaro is a hidden jewel located in a charming Milanese courtyard on Via Montenapoleone. Whether seated indoors or outdoors, you’ll enjoy traditional Italian dishes in a serene setting.
WHERE TO SHOP

Rinascente Milano: If department stores are your thing, Rinascente is a shopper’s paradise. With a mix of Italian and international designers, this one-stop shop offers everything from fashion to home goods. The cherry on top? The incredible view of the Duomo from its rooftop restaurants.
Antonia: For a luxury shopping experience, Antonia is not to be missed. This high-end destination offers limited-edition products and exclusive releases. Even if you’re just window shopping, it’s the perfect spot to stay up to date with the latest runway trends.
END: A must for lovers of streetwear, accessories, and luxury lifestyle products. Spread across three floors, This EDN is the first retail store outside the UK for the online retailer. Their collection spans both men’s and women’s styles, with an edge that streetwear enthusiasts will love.
10 Corso Como: Founded in 1991, this iconic concept store is an innovative blend of fashion and design. Over the years, 10 Corso Como has evolved into a true lifestyle hub, merging the worlds of art, culture, and fashion. It remains a symbol of Milanese creativity and craftsmanship.
Corso Venezia: One of Milan’s most prestigious shopping streets, Corso Venezia is a must for anyone looking to indulge in high-end Italian fashion. This historic boulevard is home to flagship stores of iconic luxury brands, making it the perfect place to stroll, shop, and admire the architecture. It’s also a prime location for some of the best people-watching in the city.

Milan is a city that’s both grand and intimate, sophisticated yet down-to-earth. Each visit fills me with new ideas and fresh perspectives, especially when I take the time to explore its vibrant streets, indulge in its delicious food, and absorb the energy of its fashionable residents. I hope my guide helps you experience Milan the way I have for years – with endless discovery and inspiration around every corner.
